This 9-day journey takes you from the spiritual heart of Morocco (Fes) across the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, through cedar forests, Berber villages, and fossil-rich valleys, into the Sahara Desert of Merzouga, then westward past dramatic gorges and kasbahs to the vibrant red city of Marrakech. The tour combines cultural sightseeing, natural wonders, desert trekking, and imperial city exploration.
Our Fes to Marrakech tour begins after breakfast in your riad. You will spend the morning exploring the Medina, Fes’s “Spiritual Heart,” visiting sites of immense cultural and historical interest. This includes the famous Al Karaouine Mosque and University (the oldest in the world), the traditional Tanneries, and the Najjarine Fountain.
Following lunch, we drive outside the Medina to admire the Royal Palace gate and stroll through the Mellah (the Jewish quarter), before visiting a local pottery cooperative. To wrap up the afternoon, we head to one of the city’s fortresses for a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire Fes Medina. Your overnight stay will be in an authentic riad.
Once breakfast is finished, we depart Fes for the magical Middle Atlas Mountains. Our first stop is the charming town of Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” due to its alpine architecture and cool climate.
After a short walk through town, we continue to the largest cedar forest in Morocco near Azrou, where you can spot wild Barbary Macaques. The journey continues through the mountains and various Berber villages, such as Timhdit, where we will pause for lunch. By evening, we reach Midelt for dinner and an overnight stay.
Today’s route takes us further south across the High Atlas Mountains toward Errachidia. Here, the lush Ziz Valley appears, creating a stunning palm oasis perfect for a variety of fruit trees.
Soon we reach Erfoud, the “Capital of Fossils,” where the landscape begins to change. As the asphalt ends, Saharan tracks lead us to the village of Merzouga, the gateway to the dunes. You will spend the night at a hotel situated right at the edge of the desert.
These two days are dedicated to a deep exploration of Erg Chebbi. We begin by visiting the village of Khamlia to meet local inhabitants in remote areas; these nomads are often happy to share insights into their traditional lifestyle. We will also discover old French mines near the Algerian border. For lunch, you’ll enjoy a local specialty: “Berber Pizza.”
In the afternoon, your bucket-list adventure begins. Guided by an experienced local, you will trek by camel over the golden dunes to witness a spectacular sunset. After roughly 1.5 hours, you’ll reach a desert camp for dinner and traditional Berber music under the stars.
Pro Tip: Wake up early the next morning! The Saharan sunrise is a sight you won’t want to miss.
After riding your camel back to the hotel for a shower and breakfast, the rest of the day is yours. You can try quad biking, visit nearby villages, or simply relax among the dunes.
We depart after breakfast for Rissani, the ancient site of Sijilmassa and a historic hub for salt caravans. After exploring the region’s largest market, the journey continues through semi-desert landscapes to the Tinghir Oasis.
We then enter the Todra Gorges, featuring 300-meter-high rock walls that are a magnet for climbers. Moving forward, we reach the Dades Valley and the Valley of Roses. If you’re interested, we can stop at a cooperative to see how rose water and perfumes are distilled. Finally, we travel the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” to reach Ouarzazate, Morocco’s cinematic hub. You can visit Atlas Studios before checking into your hotel.
After breakfast, we visit Ait Ben Haddou, the “Queen of Kasbahs” and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Later, we explore the Kasbah of Telouet, the former palace of the Pacha of Marrakech.
Our path then climbs the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest in Morocco at 2,260m. We will pause for lunch and panoramic photos before descending into the imperial “Red City” of Marrakech for an overnight stay at a riad.
Spend a full day discovering Marrakech with a local guide. You will visit the Menara Gardens, the Saadian Tombs, the Bahia Palace, and the iconic Koutoubia Mosque. We will also explore the vibrant Majorelle Gardens and the bustling souks.
The highlight of the day is the Djemaa El Fna square—a whirlwind of dancers, storytellers, and snake charmers. You’ll have free time to explore the hidden corners of the square at your own pace before returning to your riad.
Following breakfast, we provide a transfer to the airport in time for your flight. This concludes your 9-day journey from the heart of Fes to the wonders of Marrakech.
