This 2 Days from Marrakech to Zagora Desert is a crash course in Morocco’s dramatic contrasts. In just 48 hours, you’ll cross the high-altitude Tizi n’Tichka pass, explore ancient kasbahs and UNESCO-listed villages, and sleep under a blanket of stars in a Sahara bivouac. Perfect for travelers short on time, this journey blends mountain scenery, desert silence, and rich cultural history—from film studios to centuries-old caravan stops.
Your Zagora desert tour begins at 8:00 AM with a pickup from your riad or hotel in Marrakech. Traveling southeast in an air-conditioned 4×4 or minivan, you’ll leave the ochre city behind and pass through scattered villages before climbing into the Atlas Mountains.
The route reaches the high pass of Tizi n’Tichka (2,160m), often snow-covered in winter, where you can stop at a terrace to stretch your legs and enjoy coffee. Beyond the pass, the scenery shifts constantly as you cross Berber villages perched in the hills. Arriving in Ouarzazate, you’ll visit the beautiful Kasbah of Taourirt and the Cinema Museum, as the city is known for its film studios.
Driving another 90 kilometers through valleys brings you to Agdez, where you can admire the palm grove from a high viewpoint. A short detour off the main road leads to a lovely kasbah in Tamnougalt for lunch, with a terrace overlooking the river and palm trees. After lunch, continue to Zagora, where camels await at the end of the paved road to take you into the dunes.
You’ll arrive just in time for a majestic sunset and photo opportunities. At the desert camp, you’ll be welcomed with mint tea, shown your tents, and later enjoy a homemade dinner. The night sky is brilliantly clear, perfect for stargazing, and the evening ends with singing, dancing, and laughter around the campfire.
Begin the second day early with breakfast to catch the stunning sunrise over Zagora, another great chance for beautiful photos. You’ll then ride camels back to the paved road to meet your vehicle. Leaving Zagora, you’ll head to the fortified village of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
You’ll have lunch here before exploring the ksar, which is famous as a backdrop for films like The Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones. Seven families still live in the old village, while others have moved to the modern side of the valley.
Historically, Ait Benhaddou was a caravan stop where merchants traded salt, silver, and slaves before continuing to Marrakech or returning to the desert. After exploring the village, you’ll cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass once more and drive back to Marrakech. The tour ends with a drop-off at your riad or hotel.
